BNG FRIDAY: More illustrations!

Every Friday until its publication, I'm going to blog something about Brave New Girls: Tales of Girls and Gadgets, a YA sci-fi anthology featuring tech-savvy heroines. The goal is to encourage more girls to enter Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math professions. All revenues from sales of the anthology will be donated to a scholarship fund through the Society of Women Engineers.

Here are some more of the illustrations that will be going into the anthology! I love the mix of styles we've got :-). Oh, and I, being a font nerd, may have had something to do with the title designs on these...

Illustrations by Jennifer L. Lopez

Jennifer's style reminds me of the illustrations in the Nancy Drew books I read growing up. It was a great match for "Flight of the Zephyr" and "The Hive", both of which feature mystery, danger, and a young heroine determined to get to the bottom of the situation.

Love how her fingers are smudged - the character works in a mining colony

This one perfectly captures the danger and mystery of the story. And look! A honeybee!

Illustrations by Hazel Butler

Hazel's spunky, anime-esque style was perfect for the two plucky girl scientists featured in "Blink" and "A Little Bit Truer." And I love how it shows how nerdy girls can be stylish too!

Love the confidence in her stance and the unabashed nerdiness of the glasses and lab coat!

Just because she loves hanging out in a lab doesn't mean she can't have fun hair!
Illustrations by Kayla Keeton

Kayla's style is somewhere between Disney and anime - very cute and spirited. We thought it was a great match for "The Outpost" (about a sass-mouthed young pilot) and "Lyra" (a futuristic twist on Cinderella).

I love how the character's sass shines through in this illustration

This story's about an AI godmother gone wrong, and the worry on the character's face captures the essence of the story

Adrian's portfolio boasted a lot of really cool creature drawings, so of course we had to send him the story featuring an alien, "The Keys to the Stars"! Also love how his quirky style captures the spunk of "The Mad Scientist's Daughter."

The funky weirdness of this little fellow mirrors the story's tongue-in-cheek humor
This illustration perfectly captures the spirit and dedication of this quirky, tinkering heroine

BRAVE NEW GIRLS will be released on June 15! Sign up here to receive a notification when it's available to order.
